The square is the shape G-Shock launched with in 1983 and the one people keep coming back to. The DW-5600 is the purest version of it: resin case, 200m water resistance, EL backlight, nothing that needs explaining.

Above it, the GW-M5610 adds Tough Solar and radio time sync, the GW-5000 brings a screw-back steel case, and the GMW-B5000 is full metal throughout. They share the same footprint, so the look carries across the whole ladder.
